In the Foundation Year, you will learn about key concepts in Sports and Exercise Science from an inter-disciplinary angle, giving you a unique experience and critical perspective to make the most of the full undergraduate degree.
The Sports & Exercise Science degree at Aberystwyth University is endorsed by the British Association for Sports and Exercise Science (BASES). Our degree is interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary in nature. We combine the disciplines such as Physiology, Psychology and Biomechanics. This degree prepares you to support athletes, promote physical activity and health and deliver exercise programmes as well as developing your research, data analysis, personal and employability skills.
This course is engineered to give you the head start in the increasingly competitive job market, and upon successful completion of this degree, you will have developed the skills and awareness all of which employers are seeking.

Students can opt to take a year in industry. In this case, students will have to organise their work experience under the guidance of our Director for Employability. There is no guarantee that the work experience will be paid and if you cannot obtain a placement, you would complete the degree as would be the case as students who did not opt for a year in industry;

Our Staff
The majority of teaching staff at the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences are qualified to PhD level and are research active. Vocational courses also have staff whose background lies within industry. The Institute has a large number of research only staff with whom students may have contact.

What work experience opportunities exist whilst studying??
All modules you will take as part of the Sport and Exercise Science degree have been developed to contribute to the learning outcomes of the degree. Each module will contribute to particular degree learning outcomes and you will gain more advanced knowledge and skills as you progress. During the final year, you will have the opportunity to opt for specific modules that are closest to your area of interest, and complete a research dissertation on a topic of your choice.
Contact Time and Self-Study
You will be taught through a series of lectures and seminars by our experienced and engaging staff, but also through student-centred projects, workshops, problem-solving sessions and tutorials. Laboratory classes feature extensively and you will become skilled in using scientific equipment for sophisticated fitness testing and motion analysis. All modules are backed up by electronic resources to help you study beyond the classroom.
Assessment is based on a combination of essays, coursework, laboratory reports, quizzes, case studies, portfolios, posters, presentations and examinations.
