Physics with Education at Aberystwyth University is an interdisciplinary programme combining the expertise and ingenuity of two departments. The degree will introduce you to the broad spectrum of physics - what is arguably the most important of the natural sciences - alongside essential theories and concepts of education. While you study you will gain a range of transferable skills and will be prepared theoretically and practically for a postgraduate PGCE. You will be able to apply for PGCE teacher training courses at either Primary or Secondary level. Also, as long as you meet the entry requirements, you will be guaranteed an interview for PGCE at Aberystwyth.
Student Satisfaction and Employability Results
92% overall satisfaction with Learning Resources for the subject of Education; 85% for the sector (NSS 2020).
93% of our graduates were in work or further study within 6 months, in line with the figure for Physical Science graduates nationally, also 93% (HESA 2018*)

Learning & Teaching
What will I learn??
The breakdown below will provide you with an illustration of what you may study during the three-year degree scheme.
In the first year you will discover:
classical and modern physics
computational and experimental physics
policies and issues in education
child development
how young children learn
dynamics
basic principles of gravitational and electrostatic fields;
astronomy
energy sources and their environmental impacts.
In the second year you will explore:
thermal physics
quantum mechanics
psychology in learning and thinking
experimental analog electronics
data handling and statistics
instrumentation systems
In your final year you will investigate:
semiconductor physics
electromagnetism
optronics
condensed matter
critically reflect learning and thinking skills
atoms and molecules
numerical methods
How will I be taught?
You will be taught through lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, practicals, individual and group-based project work.
You will be assessed through coursework, presentations, lab reports, lab diaries and examinations.
Further information:
You will be assigned a personal tutor throughout your degree course, who will help you with any problems or queries, whether these are academic-related or personal issues. You should feel free to contact them at any time for help and advice.
You will also have the opportunity to complete a Personal Development Plan (PDP) at Aberystwyth. This is a structured process of self-appraisal, reflection, and planning, which will enable you to chart your personal, academic and professional development throughout your time at university. By recording your academic performance, and highlighting the skills you already have and those you will need for future employability, the PDP portfolio will equip you with the necessary tools to plan effectively, develop successful approaches to study, and consider your future career options and aspirations.

Everyday Physics enhances your understanding of the universe and everything we experience. Passionate scientists inform you of their contributions to science at the forefront of physics. Your time is split between gaining hands-on laboratory experience using exciting equipment including lasers, oscilloscopes and spectrometers, and lectures that will inspire and interest you. Each module challenges your intelligence and allows you to gain knowledge that most people benefit from but do not know exists. Students achieve excellence, and stretch their minds. It requires time and effort, but the skills and understanding you gain are second to none. Sarah Chandler
I simply love my course because the topics we discuss are interesting and relevant to the world of childhood. The lecturers are very passionate about the subject which is also reflected in the varied ways in which we are assessed - we even had the opportunity to design our own game! Much more hands-on and realistic when working with children than a dry exam! Overall, my confidence in a variety of topics and my abilities have been strengthened, which is always a good thing in any career. I would definitely recommend Aberystwyth University and the course to anyone who is interested in working with children, and I can assure you that you are given great support by staff in any kind of academic situation!
